Freshman Leadership Academy - Brazil 2017

The Freshman Leadership Academy (FLA) was created in 2010 to expose first year students to the specific duties, responsibilities, opportunities, and challenges associated with all aspects of student leadership. In its seventh year of existence, the Freshmen Leadership Academy has quickly developed into one of the most sought after programs on campus for first year students.

The Academy consists of four components: bi-monthly workshops; case studies/group projects; mentorship from upperclassmen student leaders/alumni; and community service. FLA, in line with the University, emphasizes global leadership and international cultural exchange. One goal of the Freshman Leadership Academy is to prepare and encourage students to pursue international scholarships, fellowships, study abroad, and internship/full-time job opportunities.

A number of "Alumni" have already reached this goal, as the academy recently had one student studying abroad in Brazil (named a 2017 Truman Scholar) and one student studying abroad in Ghana. In addition, FLA has had a Luard Scholar (2012) and a Truman Scholar (2016) who studied in England, several students who are Young African American Leadership Initiative (YAALI) Fellows who spent time in Ghana and South Africa engaging in research and cultural exchange, as well as students interning and working in various countries across the globe. Since its inception, the Freshman Leadership Academy has sent more than 200 students abroad through its Global Leadership Experience initiative.
