Sickle Cell Outreach Fund
September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month!
The mission of the Howard University Center for Sickle Cell Disease is to provide state of the art clinical services, community outreach, screening/testing, genetic counseling, and research.
Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is an inherited condition that affects more than 100,000 individuals in the US, predominantly Africans and African-Americans. It is estimated that approximately 2000 adults live with SCD in the DC Metro area, and approximately 1 in 12 African-Americans has sickle cell trait, many of whom don't know they are carriers of the gene mutation. There is a great need to reach out to our community and provide information about SCD.
The funds collected through this campaign will help us to maintain our outreach and educational programs such as counseling, free screening for sickle cell trait and testing supplies, educational programs, developing new informational brochures, and implementing training and awareness workshops.
